Far from Heaven

Watched “Far from Heaven” tonight. Big thumbs up. I should add though, I don’t think the film was completely devoid of irony as so many critics reported.

What many critics call irony I call cheesiness. I thought this movie was a bit heavy handed and overacted. Ok, we get it: Racism is bad! If this movie had been made in the 50s instead of now, then maybe there would be some poeple left who needed to hear what it had to say. I don’t know, though, if there are a lot of people who think of the 1950s as some sort of perfect version of America, then maybe this film could show them that it wasn’t.

I’ll admit, I was more impressed by the style than the substance. I can’t remember a film in recent memory that had such vivid color. I think the nature of the exercise almost has to yield a certain amount of cheeziness, because that’s what 50’s movies often were. However, I did find myself thinking during the film, “I bet this is too much for some”, so I don’t think you’re off base in your criticism.

I loved some of the unimportant details though, such as the mother scolding her child for saying “aww geeze”…”we don’t talk like that in this house!”

I loved this movie. Yea - a little cheasy, yet still had quality content. And I agree with the colors and such. Great movie.
